Giovanni Francesco Barbieri
ca. 1632–1636
An important seventeenth-century depiction of Saint Sebastian by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Il Guercino, one of the leading masters of the Italian Baroque. Executed in oil on canvas, the composition presents the Christian martyr Saint Sebastian, a subject that offered Baroque painters a powerful combination of religious devotion, human vulnerability and dramatic treatment of the figure.
